A collision is stressful, but a clear head and a few simple steps protect your safety, your rights, and your wallet. Keep this checklist handy — and remember our line is answered 24 hours a day.

Get to safety and check for injuries
Move out of traffic if you can do so safely, turn on your hazard lights, and check yourself and passengers for injuries. Call 911 immediately if anyone is hurt.

Call the police and file a report
Even for minor collisions, a police report creates an official record that protects you during the insurance claim. Wait for officers and get the report number.

Document everything
Photograph all vehicles, damage, license plates, the road, and any injuries. Exchange names, phone numbers, insurance details, and license plate numbers with the other driver.

Do not admit fault
Stay calm and stick to the facts when speaking with others at the scene. Let the insurance companies and police determine who is responsible.

Notify your insurance carrier
Report the accident to your insurance company as soon as possible and start your claim. You have the right to choose your own repair shop — you are never required to use the insurer’s suggestion. It’s best to let us or a trusted attorney help you with submitting requested evidence or information.
